Counseling Services for Students
The Counseling and Wellness Team at Grand Avenue Middle School provides a number of counseling services for our students. Our school psychologists and social workers engage in individual and group counseling with students who has been referred to the Pupil Personnel Services department by the school team or a parent, and have been found to have social-emotional difficulties that are negatively impacting their functioning in school. Our school counselors also meet with students individually and organize student groups throughout the school year. Additionally, our Wellness Center is open after school every Tuesday from 3:00pm-5:00pm. The Wellness Center provides students with education and support on topics relevant to social-emotional well-being. Group activities are hosted at the Wellness Center and students are also welcome to drop-in to talk to a psychologist/social worker/counselor during this time or schedule an appointment to meet.
Special Education
Special Education programs at the middle school level are designed for students who, due to learning problems, are experiencing significant difficulty in meeting success in school. The goal of all Special Education programs in the Central High School District is to help our students grow academically, socially and emotionally. We accomplish this by providing the best possible educational experience to challenge each of our students. A referral for an evaluation for special education eligibility can be made by the school team or requested by the parent, if a student has not demonstrated sufficient success with general education interventions or if the child is suspected of having a disability which impedes his or her learning. If you would like to discuss concerns or have questions about the referral and assessment process for special education, please call (516-992-1117)/email ([email protected]) me, Dr. Marla Bayles ([email protected]), or the Special Education Chairperson; Mrs. Maura Kempton (516-992-1112; [email protected]).
